Bremen isn't just a city, Bremen is whole state and two cities!
There are 3 German cities that are also federal states too, but only Bremen consists of two parts. Long before todays "Federal Republic of Germany" and the "City-State Bremen" were founded (more or less 70 years ago), Bremen already had a deal with the former Kingdom of Hannover. Bremen needed another harbour, preferably closer to the sea, and in 1827 they bought some land from Hannover where they founded the new city Bremerhaven. Since then, Bremen consists of two cities, united, although physically divided.
Bremen itself had a long history as a harbour city before. It became a bishopric in 787, got Market Rights in 888 and City rights were granted anno 1186. In the year 1358 it became part of the world famous Hanseatic League and in 1433 they released the "Eintracht" (Concord), which was Bremens constitution for hundreds of years since then.
Bremen city has partially been declared as “Umweltzone”. Only cars with a “green environmental badge” are allowed in these parts. You can buy it at tank stops.
